Anyone who has used Primavera P6 for very long knows how frustrating it can be to import native P6 (XER) files created by other users. The basic problem is that XER imports are "blind", meaning users cannot see the exact content of XER files. In many cases the import file creates duplicate codes and calendars in the database. The only options available within Primavera P6 are to accept or reject the codes, but the latter option means having to manually create new codes once the XER file has been imported. Clearly this is a big waste of time. Thankfully, there is a companion program that solves this problem: Xena by Mustang Technologies.
When someone sends you a native P6 file with global activity codes or global calendars, those codes and calendars wind up in your global dictionaries, which creates a lot of confusion over time. Many of our clients complain about seeing very similar codes such as "Area" and "Area-1" and not understanding what is happening. The answer is simple. If you import a native P6 file with a global code that is already in the global dictionary, P6 renames the imported code to avoid overwriting existing global codes. The result is a big mess in the global dictionaries.
